Ravi Venkatesan is Former Chairman of Microsoft Corporation India Pvt. Ltd. In this role, he is responsible for Microsoft’s marketing, operational and business development efforts in India. In partnership with the leaders of Microsoft’s other business units, Mr. Venkatesan provides a single point of leadership for the company, playing an integral role in defining Microsoft’s relationship with policymakers, customers and business partners.
Prior to joining Microsoft, Mr. Venkatesan worked for over seven years with Cummins Inc., a U.S.-based designer, manufacturer and distributor of engines and related technologies. He served as Vice President and Managing Director for Cummins India, Chairman of Cummins India Limited and Managing Director of Tata Cummins Limited, a joint venture between Cummins Inc. and Tata Motors.
Mr. Venkatesan is an active member of various organizations, serving in roles including the following:
- Member of the executive council of NASSCOM
- Member of the Confederation of Indian Industry
- Member of the advisory council of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay
- Member of the advisory board for Harvard Business School
- Member of the board of directors of AB Volvo
- Member of the board of directors of Thermax Ltd.
- Chairman of Junior Achievement India
He also has written numerous articles for the Harvard Business Review including “Cummins Engine Flexes its Factories,” “Strategic Sourcing—to Make or Not to Make,” and “The Strategy that Wouldn’t Travel.”
Mr. Venkatesan has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, an MS in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University, and an MBA from Harvard Business School where he was a Baker Scholar. He received the Outstanding Industrial Engineer award from Purdue University, and the Distinguished Alumnus award from the Indian Institute of Technology.
